After Jesus ascended into heaven, the book of Acts records the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and followers of Christ. This was the same Holy Spirit given to King David:
Psalm 143:10 NIV: “may your good Spirit lead me“
and the same outpouring that the Prophet Joel foresaw by the same Spirit:
Joel 2:28-30 KJV 28: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30: And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
This prophecy of the outpouring of the Spirit given to the Prophet Joel was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, exactly fifty days after the Lord Jesus was raised from the grave (pente means fifty), and exactly ten days after His ascension. This leaves exactly forty days in which our Lord met with the Disciples, showed Himself to the five hundred, and spoke on the things of the Kingdom.
1 Cor. 15:6 KJV “After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.”
Acts 1:2-5 KJV “Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. “
After the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the Disciples each spoke in tongues for the first time, each in a native language as the Holy Spirit gave utterance, such so that those around could hear and understand.
Acts 2:3-8, 11 KJV “And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?
8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? []
11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.“
