James Vernon McGee, or what his loyal listeners knew him as, Dr. J. Vernon McGee, was one of the greatest teachers of the Word of God. Dr. McGee had a warm personality and a great sense of humor. He was able to reach people’s hearts and he had a great love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Dr. McGee was extremely knowledgeable in the Scriptures, and he was able to teach with simplicity, making even the toughest verses of passage to make sense. It was truly like having God teaching you himself.
Dr. McGee was a humble man with many loyal listeners, and his ministry touched countless numbers of lives and continues to, even to this day. Vernon was able to tie Scripture together, from one end of the Bible to the other to make even the unseemable to make sense. Dr. McGee gave his credit to the Holy Spirit, whom he relied upon to teach him the Scriptures that he would in turn teach unto others.
Dr. McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas in 1904. He was pastor in downtown Los Angeles from 1949 to 1970, over 20 years. Dr. McGee pastored in total for over 40 years and taught the Bible for over 50. In 1967, McGee started teaching his popular series called Thru the Bible, a five year program through the entire Bible cover to cover, from Genesis through Revelation and everything in between. This program still lives on today in popularity being broadcast in over 100 languages all around the world. Even to this day, his voice rings around the world spreading the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ. Dr. McGee went home to be with the Lord in 1988 after many, many great years of fine ministry and service to the Lord. His name and teachings still live on to this day.
