The Spirit of forgiveness is a wonderful thing! The Bible says that the perfect love of Jesus Christ counts no wrongs against another. This Spirit of forgiveness holds no grudges or remorse. No matter what is done, it always forgives. This is the Spirit of Jesus Christ which lives in all of us as believers in Him!
We know that no matter what we have done, God has forgiven us. He has bore our guilt and our shame on the cross. Colossians 2:14 says that the Lord took everything that was against us, everything that could condemn us, and nailed it to the cross! It literally pierced through His own hands! He suffered for our sins! And not only that, He asked forgiveness of those who were doing it to Him! (Luke 23:34)
Colossians 2:14 "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;"
Because of this, and because we have that Spirit of forgiveness within us, we now have the power to forgive just as He did, even against those who wrong us.
To forgive means to completely forget. Just as the Lord has forgotten all of our sins (Psalm 103:12), so should we forgive all who have wronged us. Even the Apostle Stephen said, during his last dying breath,
Acts 7:60 "Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them!" Having said this, he fell asleep."
So when we forgive someone, we forget. This doesn't mean that we condone what they did, but we say that we are not going to hold it against them. When we forgive we are released. So many times people hold on to negative unwanted emotions that creep into an area of unforgiveness. This is why God wants us to forgive!
2 Corinthians 2:10 "But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ"
Colossians 3:13 "Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you."
You see, God wants us to forgive because it not only releases us, but also the person whom we are holding in unforgiveness. It is bondage for everyone, and no good comes from any bondage! So remember to forgive as the Lord has forgiven us. Let the Spirit of love and forgiveness help you to make the right choices and to set your spirit free in Him! God Bless!
