What is a Prophet?

What is a prophet? A prophet is one who speaks forth for God. In the Old Testament, a Prophet was one who had the Holy Spirit upon him or her, and could speak forth the Word of the Lord. Moses was a prophet. David was also a prophet.

Jesus is the greatest prophet and the fulfillment of all the prophets.

John 4:19 "The woman said to Him [Jesus Christ], "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet."

The woman acknowledged that Jesus was a prophet because He was able to know things in her heart and things about her life.

John 4:18 "For you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly."

The ministry of a prophet still exists even to this day. When Jesus ascended He gave some gift ministries unto men. One of those ministries is the ministry of a prophet. Not all are prophets, but some have been gifted with the gift of prophecy. The Holy Spirit can make use of that gift with a word of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 12:7,10 "But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit... to another prophecy..."

Ephesians 4:8 "Therefore it says, "When he [Jesus Christ] ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men."

Ephesians 4:11 "And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers"

A prophet is one who speaks forth the Word of God. Because Jesus Christ is the Word of God, a prophet in modern times will speak forth of Him.

Revelation 19:10 "For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

Although the ministry of a prophet is not the same as it used to be before Christ, it is a gift ministry that still exists to this day, and I believe that it will one day be restored to full measure by our Saviour and God. God Bless.
