Why We Need the Holy Spirit

Jesus said to His Disciples before His death that He was going away but that He would send a Comforter, One like Him to lead us and guide us until He returns (see Saved From the Wrath to Come). (John 14:26, 16:7)

John 16:7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you."

Another translation for the Holy Spirit is "the Helper" as seen above. Jesus said that He would give us the Holy Spirit in order to help us. You see, the Holy Spirit represents the prescence of Jesus Christ in our lives. Jesus said that He is a helper just like Himself.

John 14:26 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever"

The Holy Spirit is here to help us, to comfort us.

John 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come."

The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit speaks to us the Truth and teaches us about the Son.

John 15:26 "When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me"

So how else does the Spirit of God help us? Why else do we need the Holy Spirit? Well, the Holy Spirit works in our lives to transform us into the image of God, the likeness of Christ.

2 Corinthians 3:18 "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

The Spirit in us changes us to be more Christ like! It also helps with our infirmities and guides us in prayer. (See Power of the Holy Spirit in Prayer)

Romans 8:26 "Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."

The Spirit also works its manifestations (gifts) through us.

1 Corinthians 12:4 "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.

These gifts/manifestations are:

  • Word of Wisdom
  • Word of Knowledge
1 Cor. 12:8 "For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;"
  • Supernatural faith
  • Healing
1 Corinthians 12:9 "To another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit"
  • Gift of Miracles
  • Discerning of Spirits
  • Prophecy
  • Tongues
  • Interpretation

1 Corinthians 12:10 "And to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues."

1 Corinthians 12:11 "But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills."

The Spirit also produces the Fruit of Christ in us. These are:

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness (Meekness), Self Control. (Galations 5:22)

And this is only tapping into part of what the Holy Spirit does for us!

As you can see, the Holy Spirit, the blessed Comforter that the Lord Jesus sent to us and that indwells us as believers is a glorious and wonderful thing and of great importance and value in our lives as Believers in Him. He has given it to us for a purpose and we should learn to lean upon and rely upon the comforter and helper that is inside each and every one of us drawing us closer to Him! Thank you for your time! God Bless!
